Brian McDermott on positive signs from Tonga clash | 2026 Rugby League World Cup

England Men Head coach Brian McDermott spoke following his side's loss in the opening game of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

He was largely positive on how England played and praised Tonga for their committed defensive display.

With a number of debuts in the side on the day, McDermott picked them out for their impressive performances, in particular Zach Eckersley who didn't let an early mistake get to him and went on to put in a classy performance.

The format and structure of the World Cup this year means that England are relying on some results to go our way, but the England boss is positive, and believes there's every chance this team can get through to the Semi-Finals.

Games against France and Papa New Guinea are to follow in the coming weeks, and those are must win if England are to progress.
